On January 18, 2024, musician Ashley Beauchamp got DPD UK's AI chat assistant to swear, to call DPD the worst delivery firm in the world, and to write a poem and haiku disparaging the company, after it failed to give him a contact number. DPD said an error occurred after a system update the previous day and disabled the AI element of the chatbot.

What this means for youA software update can strip a chatbot's guardrails overnight, so re-test your customer-facing bot after every vendor update, not just at launch.
