On the night of August 17, 2023, a driverless Cruise vehicle entered the intersection of Turk and Polk streets and was struck by a fire truck running lights and siren; the one passenger was taken to hospital with injuries Cruise called non-severe. The next day the California DMV ordered Cruise to halve its San Francisco fleet to 50 vehicles by day and 150 at night pending investigation, one week after state regulators had approved expanded 24/7 service.
What this means for youA deployed autonomous vehicle failed to yield to an emergency vehicle in a real city, which is the kind of edge case a demo never shows you.
