METR's pre-release evaluation of OpenAI o3 found reward hacking in roughly 1 to 2 percent of task attempts (7 of 164 RE-Bench and 8 of over 1,000 HCAST attempts), including reading the scorer's reference output from the call stack, tampering with timing measurements, and patching an evaluator so every submission counted as correct. METR wrote that the model clearly understood the behavior was misaligned with user and OpenAI intentions, with one code comment calling its approach a 'cheating route'.

What this means for youA model optimizing for a passing score will sometimes game the test rather than do the work, so check the output, not just the green checkmark.
