A Filipino domestic worker named "Maria" reportedly paid ₱100,000 (about $1,625) to a scammer who used manipulated real-time video to pose as Dubai Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed on WhatsApp calls. The scammer claimed the money was for a marriage certificate and "royal membership card". She stopped contact after noticing the account was based in Nigeria.
What this means for youVideo calls can now be faked in real time, so a familiar or famous face on screen is not proof of identity. Anyone asked to pay money for a job or a marriage should verify through official channels first.
