Toledo, Ohio, police stopped Brandon Upchurch at gunpoint in April 2024 after a Flock Safety plate reader wrongly matched his truck to a stolen plate. A K-9 bit him and he was arrested. Police called it a misread, reprimanded one officer, and charges were dropped.
What this means for youAutomated plate readers can be wrong, and people can be hurt when officers act on an alert without checking it. Local governments that use them need a human check of every match before force is used.
