A 16-year-old hiker reportedly became stranded on a cliff on Crown Mountain in British Columbia, Canada, and required helicopter rescue. Rescuers reportedly attributed his dangerous route to directions from Anthropic's Claude chatbot. The hiker disputed that account, saying he mainly used Claude for a packing list and some terrain research, also consulted other mapping tools, and took a wrong turn himself.
What this means for youChatbots can give confident-sounding directions that are wrong or incomplete, so outdoor plans should rely on official trail maps, forecasts, and local rescue advice. Before a hike, check the route on a printed or official map and tell someone your plan and return time.
