On June 20, 2026, an unoccupied Zoox autonomous vehicle reportedly entered an active fire scene after heavy smoke obscured its surroundings. It braked hard, tried to steer away and stopped, then was reversed under teleguidance. Zoox later recalled 105 vehicles and issued a software update to better detect and respond to heavy smoke.

What this means for youSelf-driving cars can misjudge conditions like heavy smoke, and this one drove toward an emergency scene. If robotaxis operate in your area, local officials and emergency services may need to know how they behave near fires.
