An Estero, Florida, man allegedly posted an AI-generated image depicting Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno with a head injury, fleeing two gunmen, in an Instagram comment. Authorities attributed the post to Christopher Ashley Nimmons Jr. and treated it as a threat against the sheriff. Nimmons was arrested and charged with written or electronic threats to kill or cause bodily harm. The sheriff's office said the image was removed.
What this means for youA person used an AI image generator to make a threat against a sheriff, and an arrest followed. Threats made with AI tools are still crimes, and platforms and police treat them the same way they treat other threats.
