A Tesla driver reportedly told police that Full Self-Driving, a supervised driver-assistance system, was engaged when the vehicle struck a 71-year-old pedestrian crossing Interstate 80 in Vallejo, California. The Tesla reportedly braked and veered left before impact. At least one other vehicle was reported to have then struck the pedestrian, who died. The driver stopped and supplied dashcam footage.
What this means for youDriver-assistance features can fail to prevent crashes, and the human driver remains legally responsible for watching the road. Drivers of cars with these features should keep their hands on the wheel and eyes forward, and check the owner's manual for what the system can and cannot do.
