Tesla launched its invite-only Austin robotaxi service on June 22, 2025 with 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles and a safety supervisor in the passenger seat; rider videos showed one vehicle traveling the wrong way down a road, another braking hard in traffic near stationary police vehicles, and others speeding or swerving into the wrong lane. NHTSA said it was aware of the incidents and in contact with Tesla to gather additional information.
